Three insights from Mel Salisbury
- Defining digital literacy bought the bigger picture into focus
- MOOCs are sure to give the "Internet = learning tool" message more impact
- Mention of digital professionalism resonated as I am currently on a fixed term contract

Internet safety workshop: You are what you tweet
A workshop for people who utilse social media to reach their audiance, e.g elected council members, charities, voluntary organisations, public bodies.
It will address branding and online identity, net-etiquite and laws surrounding online content, e.g. tweets, posts.
The workshop will be a combination of 'chalk and talk' - presentations, media footage - and group work to explore any preconceptions and misconceptions of social networking - advantages, disadvantages, moderation - and to examine some case studies surrounding relevant media laws.
This workshop can be delivered with limited resources - a suitable venue, PC with internet connection, flip charts/paper and pens for group work, and a projector. Preparatory research is needed to source appropraite case studies.
Benificaries should leave the workshop feeling more confident about their online presence and with a better understanding of their rights and limitiations.

Multimedia Project: Pass I.T. On
During next month's Adult Learners Week, Get online Wrexham Flintshire will lauch 'Pass I.T. On', a new workshop for people who want to share basic I.T. skills with others.
The workshop offers a cost-effective, simple way to reach digitally excluded people who need or want to learn in their own surroundings, from someone they know well, as opposed to attending one of our group sessions. The workshop requires limited resources - a PC, internet access, projector, suitable venue.
I have created a Google site which acts as a resouse for both workshop facilitators and benificiaries. It draws the content together in one place for ease of delivery, and hosts lots of hints, tips and guides for attendees to use as a tool kit.
Access the site here.

Extension activity. Mel Salisbury.
Why? I have never thought too deeply about how it works, 'I can show you how to work it, but I can't explain how it works.' I find this fascinating and wonder whether this insight could pique an interest in the internet amongst the sceptical or fearful factions of our digitally excluded audience, by demystifying the 'magic'.
First task deadline 27 March - Mel Salisbury
Get online Wrexham Flintshire is offering a workshop during Adult Learners Week (w/c 20 May) that inspires people to share their IT skills with a digitally excluded person. This is a workshop that other Communities 2.0 teams may wish to deliver. I intend to create a Wiki that acts as a facilitator's guide, and doubles as a reference for workshop beneficiaries, collating useful links, media and resources.

[From Melanie Salisbury] iPad vs bingo
Melanie Salisbury found this blog post on ivo and thought you should see it.

iPad vs bingo
By: Melsals
And the winner is... Bingo! At least for the majority of service users at the
older peoples residential care setting we visited today.
Our presentation was reasonably well received given that it was slotted
between two rounds of bingo and residents were poised to dobb their way to a
box of Maltesers. Unfortunately, when it came to the hands on segment, 'eyes
down' trumped iPad for all but one resident, Eddie. On a brighter note,
technology came a very, very close second to tradition for a handful of the
audience, so we're confident we'll be asked to return in the near future.
We spent over an hour going through Eddie's wishlist, which included indulging
his love of classical music via YouTube, trialling Skype and being reassured
by Pricerunner that he hadn't paid over the odds for a recent purchase. We
left feeling rather smug and satisfied!
The morals to this story? One: if familiarity is king, competition could be
futile. Two: whether one by one, or group by group, it's equally rewarding to
achieve digital inclusion. Three: persistence and determination do pay off.
Here ends the sermon.

Session from Mel
Session outline:
One of the main motivators for getting online is the prospect of saving money. This session will show users how the internet can help them to make their money go further. It will focus on:
Price comparison sites (e.g. mysupermarket, pricerunner, moneysaving expert)
Free / cut price communication using Skype, Whatsapp and Viber
A summary of other savings, with input from learners - e.g. buying secondhand goods (from ebay for example), complete transactions on line to save time and money in travel costs, consulting meal planner sites
Learning outcomes:
Learners would leave the session with:
A list of price comparison sites and a clear idea of how to use them
How to reduce their telephone bills by accessing sites and utilising apps
Format:
Group sessions. A mixture of 'chalk and talk' and practical hand-on application.
Equipment:
PC and tablets
Learners' own smartphones (if available)
Internet connectivity
AV Projector / flip chart
