Possible Workshop - Choosing your Audience of your Profile Page on Facebook

My target audience for this would be a small group of 'extra care residents'. The duration of the session would be up to 2 hours as it would involve not just group discussion but one-to-one help guiding them through the process. The session could be followed up briefly at later sessions with further help. The equipment needed for the session would be: . Access to the internet. . one or more of the following per person - pc, laptop, ipad, mob phone . Facebook account and profile. I will let the residents know the week before hand that we will be learning how to limit their Facebook audience on their account, and ask them to bring along their normal and preferred equipment for accessing the internet. I will initially ensure that all those wishing to be a member of Facebook have an account/profile and know their passwords. Most of the residents have access to Facebook and have a profile already, which they or a member of their family has set up for them, but they are still learning security and settings, and want to restrict their accounts to family and friends only, as some have been getting requests for friendship from people they dont know, which confuses them and makes them feel uncomfortable using Facebook. I will show them how to go into their privacy/security settings, explain the edit button, and then explain the differences of having their account open to the public to view, open to friends only, open to family only or even if they wish open to themselves only. This would restrict contact from strangers and limit the amount of newsfeed and make their account more manageable.

'Closed Group' for Residents of an Extra Care Residency

My project is to enable residents of an extra care home to use a 'closed group' so that they can 'meet' and communicate as friends online in a private environment to themselves. This would help them if for any reason they would not wish to join them in their community lounge area of their accommodation. eg if they were feeling under the weather. It would mean that they would not feel 'cut-off' in their private accommodation and would still feel part of the group. So far I have been helping them understand the advantages and disadvantages of a 'closed group' on facebook and also facebook as a whole. Explaining to them safety procedures, helping them upload profile photographs of themselves. I have also chatted with one of the residents to ask if she would like to act as 'admin' for the group, which would help limit the members to residents only.

FACE BOOK - CLOSED GROUP

For this you would need access to the internet, and a p.c.

You would need to have a Facebook user account.


A closed group on Facebook is a ‘community’ for a specialised subject or group of people who want to discuss subjects without interaction from people outside of their group. A place where you can chat and discuss things without it appearing on your personal feed. Unless your family and friends are members of this group they would not be able to view, contribute to the group page and also they are not able to see your comments. In other words it is private to ‘group members’ only.

The ‘closed group’ has admin who have to approve anyone wanting to join the group. This restricts the group members to those interested in the subject of the group and limits interaction from those just wishing to cause a distraction.

Any number of topics can be discussed in the group at one time.  People can post any number of times on any subject.

Photographs, videos, and also links to these can be posted for members to view.

Introducing Jane

My name is Jane.  I live in Flintshire and have just started volunteering for Take Ctrl.  The aim of the group I am working with is to help them understand and gain access to the internet.  Helping them use the internet to their advantage and hopefully improve their lives by using it.

I have previously carried out voluntary work as Secretary to a Residents Association.  Setting up the Association to mainly campaign for our local childrens play park.  The small street I live on is sandwiched between rail track, River Dee and a main road.  The park was already there but badly needed a makeover to give the children somewhere safe to play.

We set up the Association February 2011 and the new park was fitted St David's Day 2012!  During this time I acted as coordinator for the park refurbishment.  We started off getting donations and volunteers to give the park a 'lick of paint', but once funding was secured I then consulted the residents and children on a number of occasions to make sure the new park was exactly what the children and parents wanted and designed to their needs.  The children named the park 'Rainbows End' and one of the little girls designed and drew the Play Park Sign.

So what started off with me thinking I can paint the fence and a hopscotch and a zebra crossing on the 'almost empty' park floor turned into practically a full-time job and a brand new park!  But its great to see the children knocking on each others doors to go off to the park to play.

I am hoping that my work with Take Ctrl at Prestatyn will be as successful, giving the residents we are working with a social experience on the internet, and the company of their friends at their 'finger tips'.
